The Method
What is The Manse Method®?
A structured, content-free psycho-sensory method that practitioners use alongside their existing work, to help reduce the emotional intensity associated with unpleasant or traumatic memories.

Why content-free matters.
For some people, talking in detail about an unpleasant or traumatic experience can feel difficult, uncomfortable or simply unnecessary.
The Manse Method® doesn’t require anyone to describe what happened. It allows a practitioner to work with the emotional response while the person keeps the content of the experience private.
The memory remains, but may feel more distant or less emotionally charged.
What it’s designed for.
The Manse Method® is designed for situations where a past experience continues to carry an unwanted emotional response, even when the person understands their story and knows the event is over.
That may include experiences associated with fear, distress, grief, embarrassment, anger, guilt, shame, phobias or traumatic memories.
The focus is not on analysing the story. The practitioner works with the emotional response associated with the memory.
What people may notice.
The experience varies from person to person.
Some people notice that a memory begins to feel further away, or that its emotional intensity reduces. For others, change may be more gradual.
There is no requirement for anyone to produce a particular response.
Who uses it professionally.
The Manse Method® is taught to practitioners who already work with people in an appropriate professional capacity: counsellors, psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, coaches, psychologists, social workers, nutritional therapists and other professionals working within emotional wellbeing, behavioural change or client support.
It is designed to be integrated alongside a practitioner’s existing approach, not to replace their skills or scope of practice.
Where research is concerned, we are careful to separate what is known about related areas from what has been shown for the method itself. Evidence and evaluation
Questions
Common questions
Does someone have to talk about what happened?
No. This is central to The Manse Method®. A person needs to be able to identify, for themselves, the memory or experience they want to work with, but they don’t need to tell the practitioner the details.
Does The Manse Method® remove memories?
No. The aim is not to erase or suppress a memory, and the person can still remember what happened. What may change is the emotional response associated with it.
Is it the same as EMDR, EFT or Havening?
No. People familiar with other therapeutic or psycho-sensory approaches may find some aspects familiar, but The Manse Method® is a distinct, structured method, taught and assessed through its own practitioner training.
We don’t position it as “better than” another approach. Different people respond to different forms of support. The important question is whether an approach is appropriate for the individual and used responsibly by someone suitably trained.
Is it a replacement for counselling, therapy or medical treatment?
No. It is not a replacement for medical, psychological, psychiatric or other regulated healthcare treatment, and it is not intended to replace counselling or psychotherapy. It is an additional, practical approach that trained practitioners use alongside the work they already do.
How can I learn the method?
